The Winter's Tale 2.0

Leontes' Despair

I believe she strayed in Polixenes' embrace
My despair is heavy, etched upon my face
And when they make me look at the child, I do fear,
It's my best friend's eyes, his features, that's clear!

Like a wildfire burning within my soul,
Betrayal takes hold, I lose control.
Oh, jealousy, you are a tangled web,
Twisting thoughts, I'm lost in dread.

I believe she strayed in Polixenes' embrace
My despair is heavy, etched upon my face
And when they make me look at the child, I do fear,
It's my best friend's eyes, his features, that's clear!

Your eyes held secrets, your words spun lies,
Deception's veil, a painful disguise.
Unfaithfulness: a bitter pill to swallow,
Shattered dreams, my heart left hollow.

I believe she strayed in Polixenes' embrace

My despair is heavy, etched upon my face
And when they make me look at the child, I do fear,
It's my best friend's eyes, his features, that's clear!

A Friendship Torn Apart

Polixenes:

O, friendship is a precious thing

Providing calm and happiness.

You’ll always hear the sweet birds sing

Of comradeship and blissfulness.

From childhood on we've been best friends

Bound by a bond that never bends.

We fought as one man side by side

In each and every bloody ride.

To know his wife has been pure bliss -

Now something here has gone amiss.

Hermione, the gracious queen,

Is stricken by her husband’s spleen!

Leontes:

Yes, friendship seemed a precious thing

Provided calm and happiness,

And you could hear the sweet birds sing

Of comradeship and blissfulness.

“You’ll find us walking in the park!”

What kinky, dinky, tricky lark!

Gentle smiles, caressing fingers -

That’s where cheeky Cupid lingers,

While resting on a cozy bench,

Canoodling like the wily French.

There’s something wrong here going on.

Polixenes has stayed too long!

Polixenes and Leontes:

Yes, friendship seemed a precious thing.

It was great while we enjoyed it,

But since it’s gone, I feel undone,

But since it’s gone, I feel undone.

Hermione's Complaint

I bore my Lord Leontes' child.

My husband seems to have gone wild:

Accuses me – how can this be –

Of monstrous infidelity!

I’ve been a husband's faithful wife,

A graceful asset all my life.

Upon our court here hangs a curse:

I’m bound for prison, if not worse.

Refrain

Jealousy – an ugly passion,

It flaws the soul, distorts the brain.

Love afflicted in this fashion

Can never really be the same.

The little creature in my arm,

It seems condemned to dreadful harm,

The king's my lord, I'll have no say

In what he asks me to obey.

However painful this will be,

Once he will come to realise

That he has thus insulted me.

Oh, could he have done otherwise!

Refrain

Jealousy - an ugly passion,

It flaws the soul, distorts the brain.

Love afflicted in this fashion

Can never really be the same.

My royal husband will soon find,

Once he has come to clearer mind,

Life will be bare of any fun –

But yet his will has to be done.

Whatever justice may decide,

I'll bear my fate and live with pride,

For I'll preserve my dignity

And personal integrity!

Emilia:

And all the courtiers secretly

Admired Queen Hermione,

The graceful queen of Sicily

Who loved her husband faithfully.
